Key Installation Factors
Proper surface preparation is critical to the performance and longevity of any resinous flooring system. The concrete must be clean, dry, and free of dust, oil, grease, and contaminants that could interfere with adhesion.
Repair all cracks, holes, and surface imperfections using an appropriate concrete patch or filler.
Mechanically profile the surface via diamond grinding or shot blasting to create the necessary surface profile (CSP 2–3 recommended for epoxy).
Ensure the substrate is free of laitance and sufficiently porous to allow for proper mechanical bonding.
Moisture testing may be required to confirm the slab meets the acceptable limits for the specified system.
When to Consider Moisture Mitigation:
-
High Moisture Readings
-
Test the concrete slab using a calcium chloride test (ASTM F1869) or in-situ relative humidity test (ASTM F2170).
-
Moisture vapor emission rates (MVER) above 3–5 lbs/1000 sq. ft./24 hr or RH levels above 75–80% often require a mitigation system depending on the coating manufacturer’s specs.
-
-
Newly Poured Concrete
-
Concrete needs time to cure — typically 28+ days. Moisture content may still be too high for coating without a vapor barrier.
-
High-early mix designs can often be overlayed after 7 days.
-
-
No Vapor Barrier Present
-
If the slab is on grade or below grade and lacks an intact vapor barrier beneath it, moisture intrusion from the subgrade is a risk.
-
-
Previous Coating Failures
-
Bubbling, delamination, or discoloration in existing coatings can indicate hydrostatic pressure or moisture vapor transmission issues.
-
-
High-Humidity Environments
-
Facilities like food processing plants, commercial kitchens, or car washes are constantly exposed to moisture and benefit from added protection.
-
-
Identifying Chemical Contamination in Concrete
Signs of Contamination:
-
Stains or discoloration (oil, grease, chemicals)
-
Water beading (from oil or sealers)
-
Unusual odors (solvents, fuels)
-
Low pH (below 8 may indicate chemical residue)
-
Residue on solvent wipe test (indicates surface contamination)
Common Contaminants:
-
Oil, grease
-
Solvents and fuels
-
Acids or alkalis
-
Chlorides and salts
Quick Tests:
-
Water drop test – poor absorption = contamination
-
Solvent rag test – residue or discoloration on rag
-
pH test – ideal range is 9–11
-
Visual/smell check
Remediation Steps:
-
Clean with industrial degreasers or emulsifiers
-
Rinse and dry thoroughly
-
Mechanically prep (grind or shot blast)
-
Use bonding primers or moisture barriers if needed
